Hyperfocus

Hyperfocus is a failure in the ability to shift focus when appropriate. Hyperfocus is an aspect of behavior people with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may exhibit. It manifests as an intense form of concentration, where the person becomes so deeply engrossed in a task that it leads to the exclusion of everything else around them. It is primarily associated with the inattentive (attention-deficit) aspect of the disorder rather than the hyperactive-impulsive aspects of ADHD.

Hyperfocus is an attentional phenomenon. People in a state of hyperfocus can become so engrossed in what they’re doing that they lose track of time and become oblivious to the world around them. It is different than attention deficit, which is an inability to focus.

People with ADHD may hyperfocus on activities that are intrinsically rewarding or stimulating but not necessarily tasks that are in line with their long-term goals or responsibilities. This behavior reflects the disorder’s impact on the brain’s reward system.
