Behavior Intervention Plan

Behavior Intervention Plan

A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is a structured plan that is designed to address specific behavioral issues in people diagnosed with ADHD. It is derived from a Functional Behavior Assessment that identifies the reasons for the behavior. It then uses this information to outline strategies and interventions to address the problematic behavior. This plan is typically more detailed than a Behavioral  Contract and is individualized based on the person’s specific needs.

A BIP is more comprehensive and tailored to individual needs than a Behavioral Contract, a simpler agreement between the individual and a specific authority figure.  A BIP typically involves a team of professionals, and it is typically more detailed and individualized based on the specific needs of the person with ADHD.

A BIP typically includes:

  • A clear, observable, and measurable description of the problematic behaviors.
  • An identification of what is triggering the behavior and an analysis of what the individual gains from it.
  • Proposed interventions include tailored strategies that include environmental changes, teaching new skills to replace the problematic behavior, positive reinforcement, and identifying the possible consequences of negative behavior.
  • Setting out measurable goals that the interventions aim to achieve.
