Explaining ADHD to Your Child

Explaining ADHD to your Child

I’m not going to lie – explaining ADHD to your child can be scary. Maybe even terrifying. Which probably explains why I kept pushing off “the talk”. But it had to happen eventually. And I am so happy it did.

Because, just like with many other parenting (and life) moments, the right approach was keeping it simple.

Being honest. Being real.

I genuinely have no negative feelings towards ADHD. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Is is challenging? Sure! Very much so! But so is the fact that my non-ADHD daughter hates school, and that my dad has a peanut allergy, and that my accountant messed up last year’s taxes.

Life is messy. People aren’t perfect. I love my son just the way he is. No, scratch that – I love my son because of the way he is.

Because with ADHD comes his witty comments that have us laughing so hard, our stomach muscles hurt. With ADHD comes his excitement for life, inspiring you with his big sparkling eyes that take in every minuscule detail you never noticed before. And with ADHD comes a heart so pure and impossibly big for the tiny body it lives in.

And like I told him that scary night, and like he knows in that big heart of his, I wouldn’t change any of it for the world.
